Hi adventurers! In my previous article, I explored the concept of RPG interactions in Gather Town. This time, I’m excited to provide a real example of such interactions with a space I’ve created: Old Babylon. This virtual world brings the RPG magic to life, showing how the principles of RPG can be implemented in Gather Town.
Old Babylon is inspired by the timeless wisdom of The Richest Man in Babylon. Adapted from George S. Clason’s classic book, this virtual world focuses on its main character—Arkad, the richest man in Babylon. In the book, Arkad shares his secrets to success through engaging parables. Meanwhile, in Old Babylon in Gather Town, we’ve recreated this experience with an RPG interactions.
Set the Scene with NPCs
In Old Babylon, NPCs are spread all around the space, dressed like people from ancient Babylon. Specifically, we made sure their looks match the style of that time, from their traditional clothes to their unique features. As players explore the town, they’ll meet these NPCs everywhere, adding to the feeling of being in ancient Babylon. This helps make the experience feel both real and exciting.
Create Quests and Challenges
In Old Babylon, Arkad himself has long since passed away, but his wisdom lives on through the NPCs. When you visit this space, you have a special quest: to collect Arkad’s valuable teachings. Each NPC represents a part of Arkad’s legacy and gives hints about his financial advice. Then, as you explore the impressive buildings of ancient Babylon, you’ll interact with these characters and discover useful tips on achieving success.
Also, if you can find all of Arkad’s advice and crack the secret code, you’ll be able to enter the sacred temple. The temple uses Gather Town’s password door feature, so only those who complete the quest can gain access. It’s a special reward for players who uncover every piece of wisdom and solve the challenges.
Use Dialogues
Just like in a game RPG, each NPC in Old Babylon will show a dialog box. These interactions might lead to new clues, extra information, or even some funny trivia. You can learn more about Arkad, or uncover hidden details. It’s a fun way to make your adventure full of surprises as you explore the ancient city.
Add Secrets
Similar to what you might find in an RPG, there’s a secret that leads to the sacred temple. To find this shortcut, you’ll need to explore the space thoroughly and be willing to explore beyond the usual path. It’s not easy to find. So, only those who are curious and brave enough to explore every corner will discover it. This secret path adds an extra layer of adventure, rewarding those who put in the effort to uncover it.
