Hi adventurers! If you love role-playing game (RPG), you’ll know that one of the best parts is interacting with NPC. The good news? You can bring that same epic RPG feeling into Gather Town! I’ve been experimenting with ways to create RPG-like interactions in Gather Town, and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned.
Set the Scene with NPCs
As we all know, in RPG, NPC or non-player characters play a crucial role. These characters often provide information, drive the story forward, or offer challenges that make the game more engaging. In Gather Town, NPCs can serve similar purposes, helping users navigate the virtual space, offering interactive dialogue, or creating opportunities for quests and missions. By adapting NPCs in this way, you can turn a simple virtual meeting space in Gather Town into an exciting RPG-like adventure filled with interactions.
Create Quests and Challenges
To make interactions more epic, you can add quests. I’ve set up challenges where players in Gather Town have to complete certain tasks. It’s a simple but effective way to recreate the feeling of an RPG adventure. Some challenge ideas you can try in Gather include finding a way out of a cave or solving a maze-like puzzle, similar to an escape room. But you can also create other challenges based on your own creativity.
You can reward players with virtual badges or even custom items. My team and I once made a mini gamification to give rewards using Google Spreadsheets. It’s still done manually, though. If you have other ideas, feel free to share them in the comments below!
Use Dialogue
I like to use NPCs to guide users, give them quests, or provide important information. It feels just like talking to an NPC in a classic RPG. To make it even more fun, you can customize their dialogue and personality to fit the theme of your space. The example above is a dialogue from an NPC in Bahasa Indonesia, showing that there are clues around the NPC to find a treasure. We can create this using Google Slides, which can be embedded into Gather Town.
Add Secrets and Easter Eggs
In any great RPG, secrets are hidden throughout the world. I love adding hidden clues, secret rooms, or fun Easter eggs that only the most curious players will find. You can use Gather Town’s customization tools to create hidden paths or special areas that unlock when players interact with the right NPCs or complete specific tasks.
Make It Epic with Music
To make the interactions truly epic, don’t forget the atmosphere! In RPGs, music plays a huge role in setting the mood. I like to add background music that changes depending on where players are in Gather Town. You can use music from YouTube by attaching it to an item in your space.
RPG-Inspired Spawn Points
Spawn points in Gather Town are where users first appear when entering a space. Instead of spawning in a typical office, imagine starting your adventure in a forest, a castle, or any other RPG-themed location. In Gather Town, you can create spawn points that immerse players in an epic world right from the start, making the experience feel more like a role-playing game and less like a standard virtual meeting space.
Creating RPG-like epic interactions in Gather Town has been a fun and creative experience for me. It brings a new layer of engagement to the space, making it feel more like an adventure than just a virtual meeting. Whether you’re using NPCs for quests, adding secret areas, or crafting dynamic dialogues, the possibilities are endless. Give it a try, and watch as your Gather Town world transforms into an epic RPG! Onward to glory, adventurer! Wanna make something like this for your class?
